Abstract

Universal precautions are observed whenever handling human blood, body fluids, or specimens as a means of preventing exposure to blood‐borne pathogens. This appendix outlines safety procedures to follow whenever undertaking research activities that involve human blood, body fluids, and specimens. © 2017 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Materials

Basic Protocol 1:

  Materials
  • Emergency spill kit including:
    • Tongs or forceps (for picking up contaminated broken material)
    • Plastic “biohazard bags”
    • Paper towels or absorbent
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
    • Non‐sterile gloves in a variety of sizes (either latex or non‐latex as appropriate)
    • Mask or safety goggles, and gown as appropriate
  • Alcohol or non‐alcohol antibacterial rub
  • 10% bleach solution (for cleaning surfaces), prepared fresh
  • Single‐use needles and other materials (tourniquets, syringes, vacutainers, tubes, etc.)
  • Puncture‐proof, leak‐proof sharps container that can be closed and secured for disposal of all needles and contaminated materials
  • Thick plastic bucket
  • Small dust broom (optional)
  • Emergency phone numbers (preferably laminated)
